Day two of IV chemo in room 8820 is underway….. and much like the weather, the mood is a little gray. Tired seems to be the word lately. Jack’s room overlooks Forest Park and most days provides an uplifting view of the outside world. When the sun is shining it’s beautiful and one we are grateful for. Through the trees we can see ice skaters, a fountain, and the usual joggers making their way through the park…. i.e. Life. Most days it’s a nice reminder that there’s a lot to look forward to. Today’s view is a bit rain soaked and dreary, and when combined with a long night of no rest, it sets the mood in the room to what only be described as blah.
Brightening up the afternoon are the little things…. a pretzel from the cafeteria, care packages from friends and family (thank you!), and naps. Yesterday was round one of IV chemo and according to Jack it was “no big deal”…. but today he seems wore out. He is taking things in stride as we learn something new about the treatment plan every day. We can’t see the finish line yet but we know it’s there. He’s starting to realize now that it’s a marathon and not a sprint, and helping keep his gas tank full right now are his friends. He’s had a couple of surprise visitors (Reed!! McKenna!!) stop in to harass him in the best kind of way. Yesterday he was happy as he had another great visit from more of his crew (Chance!! Jake!!) from So ILL which I am sure made him smile. He needs that…. There’s nothing like a visit from your homeys to lift you up, and like it’s the little things like that that keep him going.
So that’s the plan right now…. Focus on the little things…. ’cause little things lead to little victories. We keep stacking those up and we got this. 3 more rounds of chemo to go in this first cycle…. then we rest, evaluate. and do it all again. We will keep you posted…..
Until next time , Rich, Meg and Jack
