April 21, 2024

It’s been almost a month since I posted, so I thought I’d bring this blog up to date.  We’re currently at BJC for his 6th round of chemo.  His 5th round was completed in late March without side effects.  We’ve had several outpatient visits, but managed to stay out of the hospital.  On April 5th, we had a consultation with Jack’s oncologist,  Dr. Abboud, and learned that he won’t need a bone marrow transplant due to his MRD negative status (aka-remission).  That was the very best news we could expect and means that once he completes his 8th round of chemo, he’ll begin the maintenance phase of treatment.

We were home for Easter & the eclipse.  Both were amazing!  After the eclipse, I thought, “Let’s shake things up!”, so I got Covid.  Then Jack followed my lead & got Covid as well.  Blessedly, despite his compromised immune system, he only had an intermittent cough & a low grade temperature.  Our illnesses postponed Jack’s current admission by 10 days.  He readmitted on the 19th & is finishing his methotrexate today.  He has a lumbar puncture  tomorrow & then two brief doses of chemo before he can discharge. We’re ready to get back home, but know there may be a few delays as this type of chemo generally kicks his butt.  In the wise words of Jack Randle, “It’ll be done when it’s done.”  Until then, we’ll be hanging out on the 8th floor binging bad TV.  As always, thank you for the positive energy & prayers.  They’ve brought us this far & we can see the finish line!

    1. Jack chooses the shows, so nothing I can recommend unfortunately 😐. Unless you like a post-apocalyptic series based on a video game!

    Good day, Randle family,

I meant to reply right away, but obviously something distracted me … as usual. A milestone birthday is looming. I am getting goofy.

Your update was such good news, and your eclipse picture, Jack, shows such a healthy young man. Plan to go to the next U.S. eclipse in (I think) 2044. A great goal to have, among so many more that are possible. I’ll make a deal with you. You shoot for 2044 and so will I. That will be three total eclipses for both of us. Quite an accomplishment. You will be striding like a sturdy mountain goat and I will be weaving and hobbling like a … uh … 100-year-old.

I am so very happy that it seems you are now in strong recovery. You will later see this time in your life as astonishing. Did this really happen? How strong I was! How loving and tireless a support I had from my family! How smart and caring were the doctors and nurses! …. At least this is how I sometimes feel looking back at parts of my life, admittedly much less serious in content as yours right now. But it will amaze you, believe me, and rightly so.

Meg, please keep sending updates. I am so much on the fringes, now, of a precious family I had to move away from. Miss you, love you.
